At January’s LCC Monthly Meeting, au pairs in our group learned ways to prevent a household poisoning. Children, ages 2-6, are the most likely to have a poisoning accident and they are many things parents and caretakers can do to minimize this risk. Au Pairs took a “Look Alike Poison” quiz comparing medicines and candies that are similar in appearance to see if they can tell which is which. They also looked at liquids such as chemical cleaners, automotive products, medicines, food items, and drinks to see if they could determine what’s safe to drink. The au pairs certainly came away knowing how children can easily confuse everyday items found in the home for something that can harm them.

Holiday On Ice For Cultural Care Au Pair Host Families and Au Pairs

Cultural Care Au Pair hosted a fun filled multi cultural Holiday Party for families and au pairs from communities in and around Libertyville at the Glacier Ice Arena in Vernon Hills, Illinois on a Sunday afternoon.

Au pairs representing the countries of Peru, Chile, Poland, Mexico, Colombia, Sweden, Germany, and Austria enjoyed the family time on the ice with their host families and children. For the Spanish speaking au pairs this was their first time ice skating with the help of the arena’s skating coaches. One of the arena’s instructors is currently hosting an au pair from Brazil

Every one enjoyed international desserts prepared by the au pairs, hot chocolate and traditional American holiday treats. Children worked on holiday crafts with their au pairs; making candy cane reindeer ornaments, dinner placements from recycled holiday cards, and other various fun festive projects.

Families posed with their au pairs for a holiday photo. Even one grandmother who had just arrived from Rhode Island joined in the holiday festivities and shared her memories about the many au pairs her daughter has hosted since her teenage sons were just babies.

Cultural Care Au Pair Local Childcare Coordinator (LCC) Karen Relstab of Libertyville, Illinois plans these types of events during the year for her host families, au pairs and those families interested in learning about the au pair program. If you would like information about hosting an au pair as a live-in childcare provider, contact Karen Relstab telephone 847-680-3794, email karen.relstab@lcc.culturalcare.com, or visit her website http://krelstab.aupairnews.com

Third Annual Chicago Area Scavenger Hunt A Huge Success!!!

For a third year in a row, several hundred au pairs came to downtown Chicago’s Millennium Park on a fall Saturday afternoon to participate in the Cultural Care Au Pair Chicago Area Scavenger Hunt. Under partly sunny skies with the temperature in the 70’s,  40 plus teams of 5 au pairs each set out with questionnaire booklet in hand to get as many correct answers to 130 questions and a chance to take home a prize.  Do you know what buildings are referred to as the corncobs? Do you know what  ORD stands for? Do you know who were the Chicago Eight? And do you know where the structure is that Chicago’s Buckingham Fountain was model after?  Our au pairs know these answers and also much more information about this great city. See for yourself, the photos tell the story.

This evening several of my au pairs were part of a significantly large group of womem who learned various techniques on how to protect themselves if they find themselves in a situation where someone is trying to inflict harm on them.

The free Women’s Self Defense Seminar was held at the Northshore Academy of Martial Arts in Libertyville.  Marc Halleck the owner and several of his instructors  let the women practice their new self defense techniques taught to them by Cliff Paul, a certified tactical master instructor.

The techniques that Cliff trained the women on gave them the confidence to be their own best defense when something or someone goes wrong.

Thanks Cliff, Marc, and the instructors of the Northshore Academy!!!

SEMINAR NOTES

A wareness is the key to self-defense - always be alert and aware. There is a difference between being paranoid and having a “heightened awareness”. Walking around with a walk-man on, reading a book is inviting trouble. The message you are sending is grab me from behind 1 can’t hear you coming, grab my purse 1 can’t see you coming, Stay Alert!

Most violence is committed by people who know each other, this is especially true with rape and murder!!

10 GOLDEN RULES OF SELF-DEFENSE

  • 1. - Acceptance - The victim mind set will seal your fate. “Oh-my god, 1 can’t believe this is happening to me” The key to action is to accept the situation and move on, this is the first step towards tapping into the “victor mind set”.
  • 2. - Get Challenged - The moment you sense danger get challenged, picture whatever motivates you, picture this scum attacking your children, husband, mother, pet, this will get you challenged. You want your inner coach to support your effort “I can”
  • 3. - Don’t Stop Thinking - Where can 1 run, is someone around who 1 can call for help, what weapons are available, whats the closest weapon to closest target, The brain is an amazing bio-computer and can process things in nano-seconds, remember many people freeze in situations because they simply stop thinking.
  • 4. - Never Telegraph Pre-Paredness - Anything you do to forewarn your opponent only serves to fuel the fire, don’t adopt an aggressive posture, you don’t need your attacker more pre-pared, let him be over confident
  • 5. - Identify Your Natural Stances - Make your fighting stance your everyday stance and your every day stance your fighting stance. Fight from wherever you are, every position you are in is a fighting stance.
  • 6. - No Fear - Remind yourself False Evidence Appearing Real is your real enemy, more so than your opponent. Fake fear (it won’t be to hard) to draw an attack, an opponent who believes you to be afraid of him will make many mistakes.
  • 7. - Negotiate - Be nice until it’s time not to be nice. Try to verbally defuse the confrontation using “choice speech”, “how would you feel if this was your sister or mother”, Those who talk can be persuaded to walk, but always be ready.
  • 8. - Never Trust Your Attacker - “Do what I say and I won’t hurt you” What makes your attacker trustworthy? These people are scum and should never be taken at there word.
  • 9. - Hit Hard, Hit Fast, Hit First - After you have tried your verbal defuse and choice speech and things don’t seem to be working you have to make the choice before hand that you will defend yourself at all costs. This means striking first, fast and hard, Remember It is better to be tried by 12 than carried by 6.

10. - Stun and Run - As soon as you can get the hell out of there.

Remember: A VIP (very important person) hires a bodyguard to protect him. To your family you are a VIP and the only person who is going to protect you or them is you.

Officer Andy from the Libertyville Police Department guided our group through a tour of the police station, which included the 911 center, booking room, jail cells, police cars, swat suv, finger printing station, detective area, and then gave us a presentation on personal safety for ourselves and the children we care for.

Office Andy has been a police office for 10 years, and had lots of information to share with us. Although she is only around  5″ tall and around 100 pounds she also does self defense training for women and shared some of her knowledge with the group.  She has offered to do self defense classes for the female au pairs, so we will be scheduling those in the near future.
